Thomas Hughes (October 20, 1822 – March 22, 1896) was an English lawyer and creator. He is best known for his novel ''Tom Brown's School Days (1857), a semi-autobigraphical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes had attended. It experienced the lesser-known sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford (1861).

Biography

Hughes was a 2nd boy of John Hughes, editor of the Boscobel Tracts'' (1830). Thomas Hughes was innate around Uffington, Berkshire. Within February 1834 he went to Rugby School, which was then under Dr Thomas Arnold, a coeval of his father at Oriel College, Oxford. inside the sixth form, he inherit email using the schoolmaster, whom he later idealized; however he shine at sports like than around scholarship, & his school career culminated in a cricket match at Lord's Cricket Ground. Around 1842 he went on to Oriel window, & graduated B.The. within 1845. He was known as to the bar around 1848, became Queen's Counsel in 1869 and a bencher in 1870, and was appointed to a county court judgeship in the Chester district in July 1882.

Hughes was elected to Parliament as a Liberal for Lambeth (1865–1868), and for Frome (1868–1874). An inspiring reformist, he became concerned in the Christian socialism movement led by Frederick Maurice, which he had joined within 1848. He was required in the formation of a bit of early trade unions. Virtually all notably, around January 1854 he was one of a original promoters of the Working Men's College within Great Ormond Street.

Around 1880 he founded a class action settlement around America — Rugby, Tennessee — which was designed as an experiment in utopian living for 2nd sons of the English aristocracy, although this late proved largely abortive.

Within 1848 Hughes got married Frances Ford. It settled within 1853 at Wimbledon and whilst residing there Hughes wrote his renowned story, ''Tom Red's School-Schooltime, which come call at April 1857.

Hughes besides wrote A Scouring of the Whitecap (1859), Tom 'last at Oxford (1861), Religio Laici (1868), Life of Alfred the Great (1869) and a Memoir of the Brother. His brother was George Hughes, world health organization a character of Tom Dark brown was depending upon.
